Thinking About Adding On To Your House?

This time of the year, people start to think about adding on to their house.  Whether it be a Florida room or an apartment, care must be taken to keep out termites and other pests.  While termites are not a major problem in the upper Midwest there are certain steps to take to keep pests out.

First, if you are in an area prone to termite infestation, make sure that all building is according to the state and local building code.  This will usually mean that wood cannot rest on the ground and that a treatment must be done to the soil under the addition so that termites are held at bay.  Also, never use foam insulation in contact with the ground or under the ground.  This is a prescription for later infestation and will jeopardize your investment.

To keep mice and other rodents out, make sure that all holes of larger diameter than a pencil are sealed.  Also, seal any cracks and voids.  Also, don’t overlook proper drainage at the foundation and always install gutters or diverts which will channel the water away from the building.  Your pest control firm can help provide information on pest proofing.
